ClearCase Work Area Manager presents the user with an overview of an entire design workspace in-terms of the information pertaining to the design management. It lists the design libraries managed by ClearCase in a tree representation. User can perform basic and advance design management operations on the designs listed under WAM.

Invocation

The ClearCase Work Area Manager is invoked via the Cadence Library manager. To browse the list of all version controlled libraries, choose the Design Manager menu and click ‘ClearCase Workarea Manager’ menu item. To browse a single library, select that library in the library manager and right click it to show the context menu. Select “Browse Library” to browse that library only.

Tree Widget

The tree widget is the central place for displaying the information and interacting with the version controlled items. The left-most column contains the tree. The default display is the hierarchy of library, category or cellview based on the invocation type. Sub hierarchies can be opened via the + symbol left of the tree items, and closed by pressing the – symbol for expanded items.

The columns that are to the right of the tree structure contains the design management properties of the corresponding items. Their visibility can be customized via the edit columns button or right clicking on the column header and selecting or deselecting a column. The tree widget supports multiple selections. The menu and toolbar button commands work on all selected items, as far as applicable.

Item Details

Item Details is a dock able window comprising of two widgets, the item description and the item labels. It displays the comments if any provided during the last design management operation as well as the list of existing labels on a singly selected item.

Context Menu

Right-clicking the tree widget displays a context menu with operations to be called on the selected items. The menu items correspond to those in the menu bar.

Tree Filtering

When the filter button or menu item is selected the filter form is shown. User can specify multiple filter criterion for the tree widget. 'Prefetch data' option will fetch design management information for every item before applying filter. Filtering with this option may take time but it is essential if user expects the unexpanded items to be considered during the filtering.  To clear filtering, make the filter criterion empty.

Operation Dialogs

All commands from the ClearCase menu that affect more than one item potentially open a form which a user can use to select the items to operate upon. The list box is populated with the selections from the tree widget. Use the “Remove Selected” button to remove items on which the operation is not to be performed. Use the Comment field to add a comment for the operation, which will be stored in ClearCase. Special options, if any, for the operation that is to be run are specified in the “Use Options:” field.

Filtering Capabilities in Operation dialogs

Check-in, Checkout, Cancel Checkout and Label dialogs provide filtering capabilities on the cellviews listed in operation dialogs. User can choose to apply filter on these cellviews based on their name or type by leveraging the filtering controls. Filtering supports PCRE compliant regular expressions.

Scan Checkedout Directories

“Scan Checkedout Directories…” can be leveraged to scan and act upon the library, cell or cellview directories which were left checked-out because of an operation failing. In the absence of a context, “Scan Checkedout Directories“ menu item under “ClearCase” menu, scans all managed libraries for checked out directories. If a category is set as the context, scanning is confined to the cells and subcategories of that category. The results of scan are displayed in a form that enables user to check in or cancel checkout the checkedout directories.

Convert Checkouts

“Convert Checkouts” menu item under “ClearCase” menu Converts reserved checkouts to unreserved and vice-a-versa. These options are handy in a single stream/branch development specially when a user is blocked from making reserved checkouts on a design due to an existing reserved checkout.

Automatic Checkin of Metadata Files

During an initial checkin of a design library (add to source) from Workarea Manager (WAM) crucial metadata files specifically .oalib, data.dm and cdsinfo.tag are automatically added to ClearCase.

Does your organization do Custom IC designing? Do you use Cadence Virtuoso? Do you use ClearCase? If yes or for additional details on this integration and its salient features, reach out to me or comment below.
